By Aaron Humes: It was once a political slogan, but the now elected Government of Belize is gathering its foremost minds to turn Plan Belize into a Medium Term Development Strategy for the country over the next four years.

The group met in Belmopan on Friday, co-chaired by the CEOs in the Ministries of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, Dr. Osmond Martinez, and Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Dr Kenrick Williams. Representatives on the committee hail from both Ministries and the Ministry of Human Development as well as associate support agencies like the Statistical Institute of Belize and the University of Belize.

The strategy is expected to build on and draw from previous efforts including Horizon 2030, the long-term development strategy for Belize, and focus specifically on poverty reduction and social protection and inclusion; economic transformation and growth; reduction of the trade deficit; citizen security; protection of the environment, and removing corruption at government level.

Stakeholder consultation on the development of the strategy by the lead Ministries’ technocrats begin today, Tuesday, and the strategy is expected to be completed by year’s end.
