64-year-old man charged with possession of crack cocaine jumps into canal trying to escape police

Posted: Wednesday, August 25, 2021. 3:24 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Richard Garbutt, 64, was fined in court yesterday for possession of crack cocaine, resisting arrest, and escaping police custody.

Police say that that on Monday, Garbutt was riding his bicycle on Nargusta Street and when he saw the officers, he threw away a rolled-up piece of foil paper. The officers retrieved the foil and determined that it was crack cocaine, but when they detained Garbutt, he jumped out of the police mobile into a nearby canal in an attempt to escape.

In court, he pleaded mercy from the magistrate, saying that he had kept out of trouble with the law for years and was truly remorseful. The magistrate fined him a combined $400 for all his offenses plus a total of $20 cost of court fees. For the crack cocaine he has up to September 30 to pay the $100 fine, for the escape, he has until October 30 to pay another $100 fine. He also has until November 30 to pay a $200 fine for resisting arrest.
