Belize Athletics Association thanks Samantha Dirks, Shaun Gill for representing Belize at Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Posted: Wednesday, August 25, 2021. 9:08 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “On behalf of the executive and members of the BAA and the people of Belize, Samantha and Shaun, a big thank you. Continue your quest to excel,” said the Belize Athletics Association (BAA) as it is extended “a heartfelt thanks” to the two athletes who represented Belize and the BAA at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

“Samantha Dirks in the 400m and Shaun Gill in the 100m, represented Belize to the best of their ability,” said the BAA. “As Belizeans, both have represented the country at various regional events over the years and have done very well in their performances.”

The BAA said both Dirks and Gill trained in the United States and were on a partial scholarship from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), financed through the Olympic Solidarity Funds.

Dirks ran the 400m in 54.16 seconds finishing 7th in Heat 3 at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on Tuesday, August 3.

Gill clocked 10.88 seconds in the 100m on Saturday, August 1, finishing in 5th place in the first preliminary heat at the Olympic Stadium as well.

“Though they did not advance to the next round in their events, we are still proud of them. They did their best considering the situations they faced as it relates to COVID-19 and not being able to train as normal or represent at more events over the year,” said the BAA.

“We hope and pray that more of our Belizean athletes would be able to represent us at other major events with better performances. It is our hope that as we work with the entities responsible for ensuring the environment and atmosphere is conducive for better training and performance, more athletes will be able to perform better,” added the BAA.

Since the Tokyo Olympics were delayed by a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we only have three years to prepare for the next Olympics reminded the BAA saying that “the work continues”.
