Cabinet advises Belizeans to remain alert as tropical wave is expected to develop in the southwestern Caribbean

Posted: Wednesday, August 25, 2021. 10:05 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) is currently three tropical waves, two of which have the potential of becoming tropical depressions by the end of the week. One of these areas of low pressure is in the southwestern Caribbean Sea and is headed our way. As a result, Cabinet is asking all Belizeans to remain alert.

This broad area of low pressure in the southwestern Caribbean, north of Columbia, is expected to form during the next day or two from a tropical wave and is the one that Cabinet is concerned about. According to the NHC “environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for development, and a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form late this week or over the weekend”.

The system is expected to move northwestward over the northwestern Caribbean sea and near or across the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico on Friday. The NHC notes that “regardless of development, heavy rainfall and flooding will be possible in portions of Central America and the Yucatan Peninsula”.

As of 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, the NHC upgraded its earlier 40% to now 60% chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours and maintained an 80% probability of it doing so within the next five days.

Cabinet notes that this system is expected to bring rains and flooding, especially in the northern part of the country over the course of the weekend and that the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) continues to monitor the system and will provide timely updates to the nation.
