By Aaron Humes: According to FOX 13 Tampa Bay, Carnival Cruise Lines has disclaimed any responsibility for the death of a passenger from COVID-19 who cruised aboard the Carnival Vista ship.
The company spokesperson said the guest, Marilyn Tackett, 77, “almost certainly did not contract COVID on our ship,”; however, he acknowledged that the Belize government and health system as well as the ship’s own medical staff gave expert medical care during her ordeal. The company also said it was sorry to hear of her passing.
Tackett got sick and was diagnosed and hospitalized with COVID-19 here in Belize, then was airlfited to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she died on August 14.
Some 26 crew members of the Vista tested positive between the ship’s stops in Roatan, Honduras, and Belize City of more than 1,400 crew and nearly 3 thousand passengers. The Belize Tourism Board reported that a supermajority of both classes was vaccinated.
The cruise company said it has strict protocols in place. Vaccinated guests are required to show proof of vaccination plus a negative COVID-19 test at check-in. Those who are unable to be vaccinated must be tested before boarding the ship and once again when the ship docks. Guests must also wear masks in indoor areas.
“Unfortunately, no venue on land or at sea is COVID-free right now, but we are committed to protecting the health and safety of our guests, crew and the communities we visit and have not hesitated to act quickly and go beyond existing public health guidelines,” the company said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on its website that it had investigated the Carnival Vista and the ship remains under observation.
