CONSUMER PRICE INDEX: Inflation rate rises 2.2 percent

Posted: Wednesday, August 25, 2021. 1:20 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Fuel and food are driving increases in prices for the most common goods according to the Statistical Institute of Belize.

Cumulatively, Belize has experienced an increase of 2.2 percent in prices since January.

Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 4.6 percent, led by meats and fresh vegetables, the latter rising near 11 percent. Higher prices were especially seen for pigtail, natural milk, potatoes, onions and other vegetables.

Rising prices for diesel and gasoline fueled prices in the transport category but Belizeans still purchased more motor vehicles.

On average, prices for diesel rose 1 dollar 12 cents and regular gasoline by 1 dollar 16 cents; premium rose by 10 cents.

Butane prices rose nearly 18 percent, from an average of 95 dollars last year to 117 dollars this year, while home rentals rose slightly, and electricity prices decreased slightly.

Belizeans are also paying more attention to their hygiene, paying more for personal and bathroom hygiene products and even for hairdressing.

However, accommodation prices remain low.
