New ePassport system approved by Cabinet, ePassports may be in use by July 2022

By BBN Staff: At this week’s meeting of Cabinet, an update was provided on the current status in the implementation of the new ePassport system and ePassports. After the update was provided, Cabinet approved the base concept of the ePassport design proposal.

It is no secret that for some time now Belize has been struggling with maintaining credibility in its passport system.The manual passports that were first used were stolen in masse from the Passport Office, sold as blanks for handsome prices, and used to create false passports. Since then Belize has come a long way and passport data is now recorded and maintained in an electronic database managed by the Immigration Department in Belmopan.

The approval of the new system is expected to provide additional security for, and improve the integrity of, the Belize Passport.

Cabinet says that with Tuesday’s approval, the way is paved for the ePassport to be introduced in July 2022.
