Sugar, banana lead agricultural comeback

Posted: Wednesday, August 25, 2021. 12:10 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Two of Belize’s big three agricultural industries are on the comeback trail after drought and pandemic related setbacks.

Sugar produced more than 100 thousand tons than last year, while banana rose by a few million.

Cattle production in the second quarter rose by about 8 thousand heads from last year, driven by a 92 percent increase in exported live animals.

Poultry production rose from nearly 8 million pounds to just over 10 million, matching market demand. There were also healthy increases for conch and shrimp exports but a reduction of lobster exports.

Citrus on the other hand continued to decline as a result of the toll of the HLB citrus greening issue and reduced production from older trees.
