Ministry of Health and Wellness granted GeneXpert diagnostic equipment

By Aaron Humes: This afternoon the Ministry of Health and Wellness accepted from its partners at the Pan American/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the European Union Directorate-General for International Partnership two GeneXpert machines to assist with diagnostic capacity and early detection of samples processed at our National Medical Laboratory.

Minister of Health and Wellness, Michel Chebat, expressed his appreciation to the donors and he reaffirmed his commitment on behalf of the Government of Belize to do whatever is necessary to protect the people of Belize from COVID-19.

While the Ministry welcomes this additional equipment at our medical laboratory to help in the processing of suspected COVID-19 samples, it will also be primarily used for the detection of Tuberculosis and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI).

Presently Belize uses a rapid antigens test for immediate diagnosis followed by a PCR test for confirmation.
