By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Pfizer and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines are very effective in preventing hospitalization of a person infected with the Delta Variant said health authorities in England, according to a Bloomberg report.
The report announced by Public Health England last Monday said that once a person is fully vaccinated, the Pfizer and BioNTech SE vaccine is 96% effective against hospitalization, while the AstraZeneca and University of Oxford COVID vaccines are 92% effective. The results are reportedly similar to the protection the vaccines offer against the Alpha variant.
Like all countries, the United Kingdom is ramping up its vaccination drive.
“The vaccines are the most important tool we have against Covid-19,” said Mary Ramsay, PHE’s head of immunization. “It is absolutely vital to get both doses as soon as they are offered to you, to gain maximum protection against all existing and emerging variants.”
According to researchers in Scotland, Pfizer was 92% effective against the Alpha variant and 79% against the Delta 14 days after the second dose. AstraZeneca was 73% against the Alpha and 60% against the Delta.
The research also pointed out that people who have been infected with the Delta variant are more than twice as likely to not be hospitalized.
