United States CDC advises doctors, people against ivermectin to treat COVID-19, encourage people to vaccinate

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United States Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday issued a health advisory to US doctors and the public alerting against the use of ivermectin after increased prescriptions and reports of severe illness said CNN.

Ivermectin is a drug used for deworming large animals and is also used to treat parasites such as worms and lice in humans.

The CDC said that before the pandemic, an average of 3,600 prescriptions was issued weekly. Since early July, 88,000 prescriptions are now written on a weekly basis. That’s 24 times more than before the pandemic.

That doesn’t include pills that people order online or ivermectin that people buy at farm supply stores said Medscape.

Ivermectin that is meant for animals may have higher concentrations and may contain inactive ingredients that have not been evaluated for use in humans said the CDC.

“You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it,” tweeted the United States Food and Drug Administration last Saturday as it warned people not to use ivermectin to treat Covid-19.

The CDC said that ivermectin has not been authorized or approved for use in Covid-19 patients.

Vaccination is the safest and most effective way to prevent getting sick and to protect against severe disease and death if one gets infected with COVID-19.

Medscape said signs of overdose include:

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
Low blood pressure
Mental status changes such as decreased consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, coma, and death.
