By BBN Staff: It has been 11 days since the Government of Belize instituted a state of emergency (SOE) for the south side of Belize City to address an escalating gang feud and in that time more than 50 men have been detained under those provisions.
Today, Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett gave a brief update, stressing that he could not disclose how many more were being sought under the SOE, as investigations are ongoing.
Myvett said that some of those wanted are believed to have fled Belize City, while others are expected to be moving between locations in the city while avoiding the police.
He stressed that anyone found harboring those wanted under the SOE are also committing an offense and can be charged for it.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said at the start of the operation that it became necessary to use the state of emergency because people were living in fear in their own communities, while gang members were getting bold enough to burn down people’s houses.
Williams said that the hopes are the men will be detained under anti-gang legislation, long enough for investigators to gather concrete evidence on them to charge for more serious offenses.
