Agreement drafted on collective bargaining agreement for staff of Port of Belize

Posted: Wednesday, September 1, 2021. 7:39 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: It has been quiet on the waterfront for weeks now after the explosive introduction of documents that suggested, to stevedores, an inside conspiracy to devalue their position at the expense of families in Southside Belize City.

But on the key issues of the Christian Workers Union (CWU) this week, Labour Minister Oscar Requena has reported progress according to a Cabinet briefing.

There is now a draft collective bargaining agreement with respect to staff of Port of Belize Limited, being finalized after negotiations between the CWU and the Port.

Meanwhile in relation to stevedores, the meeting with the Labour Tribunal is scheduled to take place on 6th September 2021. Their concerns are compensation for the all-but-certain removal of bulk raw sugar export to the Big Creek Port and questions of rostering substitutes.
