By Benjamin Flowers: Every year since 2009, Oceana Belize has acknowledged Belizeans striving to make a difference in the area of conservation with its Ocean Hero awards, and this year the tradition continues in an online format.
Today, Oceana announced that the 20221 Ocean Hero Awards virtual event will be held on Wednesday, September 29. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. and those wishing to tune in to the Facebook live stream can register here.
Breaking Belize News spoke with Oceana Belize today and learned that there are several considerations made when choosing recipients for the Ocean Hero Award. Those considerations include whether or not the work the nominee does fits into the marine-related areas of work outlined in our submission form ( (Teaching and education; On-ground conservation; restoration and rehabilitation work; Project work; Private or individual research); and how their work aligns with our campaign goals and if they have any relevant achievements/awards in their lifetime that speak to the environmental commitment.
“Lastly, we evaluate the scope of the nominee’s work along with the community impact because it’s very important for us as an organization to acknowledge people’s efforts to leave their community better than they found it,” Oceana Belize said.
Oceana also acknowledged that there are many hardworking individuals striving to improve the environment and their deeds, too often, go unnoticed.
Last Ocean Hero Award recipients were Placencia fisher turned seaweed farmer, Lowell Godfrey and Punta Gorda fisher and businessman, Neville Smith.
