By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The World Health Organization (WHO) said that it is now monitoring a new coronavirus variant called “mu” according to CNBC.
The new variant has mutations that may cause natural immunity, current vaccines, or monoclonal antibody treatments may not work as they do with the original variant. said WHO on Tuesday.
WHO has categorized ‘mu” as a variant of interest.
The variant, WHO said, was first identified in Colombia but has now been found in 39 countries.
Mu, which is referred to by scientists as B.1.621, needs to be studied more to find out if it is a variant of concern (more contagious, more deadly, or more resistant to the vaccines and treatments being used right now).
At this point, the WHO is monitoring four variants of concern, and four variants of interest.
The variants of concern are delta, alpha, beta, and gamma.
The variants of interest, like lambda, are variants that have produced outbreaks in multiple countries and have genetic changes that make them more dangerous than other strains but are not as dangerous, contagious, and resistant as the variants of concern.
