UDP Leader Patrick Faber: “there can only be one Leader of the Opposition in name and in post”

By Aaron Humes: There can only be one leader of the Opposition in name and in post, said once and possibly future Leader, Patrick Faber, on LOVE FM’s The Morning Show this week.

Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow has retaken the public spotlight after a triumphant return trip to the U.S. He of course insists that the trip was not about his image, but that of Belize’s. And he has insisted that he was kept informed of activities here by party officials.

For Faber the issue is clear:
“The leader of the party is in the house and it is why I believe majority of those in the party believe that this ought to be the case. Listen, if you sit in our central executive meetings and even now, I’m convinced that if you speak to the majority of those former candidates of the party, you will understand that those persons want to see the leader of the party be the leader in parliament as well. [My] colleague, the leader of the opposition of course seems to think that he needs to do everything separate from the party, he puts out his own releases, he has his own press conferences I see now – so these kinds of things hamper the unity of the party and we’d like to see that change very quickly.”

Faber broadly hinted that despite the result of the recall convention in July, where he avoided ouster, some are “ensuring that things don’t go the way the majority of this party wants it.”

It appears that the fulcrum of party leadership is Corozal North area representative and first Deputy Leader Hugo Patt, who along with Denise Barrow of Queens Square voted for Faber’s ouster by Shyne but now appears to be wavering.

Faber also heavily hinted that former Leader Dean Barrow’s hands are not as clean as he would suggest in the intra-party rivalry: “While the former leader does not outrightly and of course he tries his best to be very non-biased in the description of the situation yesterday, his hands continue to move. I will not lie to anybody and that’s a part of the issue, but as I said I won’t get into all the nitty gritty, because it’s not healthy for our party.”

The plot lines begin to play out in the House on Friday as well as moving forward.
