By Aaron Humes: The Lower House in a special session is meeting to consider two new bills and several motions.
As previously reported, the House is to approve the enlarging of time limits for appeal from the Supreme Court to the Court of Appeal and to increase the penalty for the offense of spreading and publishing false news.
Further, the House resolves after some contretemps to transfer to the Belize Maya Forest Trust carbon rights and credits associated therewith in connection with the Conservation Lands for the sole use and benefit of the conservation lands, once various costs are reimbursed by agreement and the Government holds the exclusive right to determine the use and disposition of excess or surplus amounts of proceeds of the sale.
Separately, an agreement has been made to transfer under similar terms to the Maya Forest Corridor Trust.
And, the Government resolves that it is obliged to present a case in the United Kingdom as Jamaica plans to do on the question of whether the United Kingdom is liable for slavery in Belize up to 1833 and reparations thereafter; and to proceed with valuating the economic cost of slavery and human rights abuses engendered and urge fellow CARICOM states to resolve same.
More as it happens.
