By Aaron Humes: Answering the question put by Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow beforehand, Minister of Health Michel Chebat has held out the promise of lifting COVID-19 restrictions if more people get vaccinated.
Saying that the point has been discussed time and time again, Chebat noted that just shy of 40 percent of the population has gotten one shot and 17 percent both. The Ministry of Health has estimated that about 70 percent of Belizeans need to be vaccinated for herd immunity to develop.
He singled out Southside Belize City in particular, advising Barrow, “What you should invest some time in doing is traveling on the Southside of Belize City encouraging the constituents of the Southside to come out and get vaccinated.
This is the way for us to move our country forward. This is the only way to protect our people from this deadly virus.”Earlier, Prime Minister John Briceno said Belizeans had no excuse to be sick or dying with the vaccines plentifully available and free.
