Belize police ‘tried their best’ but failed to intercept drug cargo, weapons found in Guatemalan territory then kept quiet on the bust

By Aaron Humes: A thousand-kilo haul of suspected cocaine, five rifles, and more than 300 rounds of ammunition was recovered on Sunday by the Guatemalan Armed Forces on their side of the Sarstoon River.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams said today that Belizean authorities had the information and arrayed themselves to intercept at multiple locations, but this cargo landed in an extremely remote area which was more accessible to them than to us.

Some have suggested that Belize missed an opportunity but Williams said our men tried their best to get to the drugs and guns but were not able to. Authorities kept silent to ensure “they were not in increased danger from the cartels keeping track of their shipment.”

Landings of planes have largely declined this year because of the increased publicity but so many do make it in and the cargo over the borders, headed ultimately to the United States.
