By BBN Staff: Minister of Youth, Sports & E-governance Kevin Bernard is among the latest to express his outrage at the shooting of 29-year-old Belize Defense Force soldier, Jesse Escobar.
“As I am sure has been the case for many Belizeans, the anguished cries of a child and the shock and pain of a mother who saw their loved one killed in cold blood over the weekend have stayed with me,” Bernard said in a statement issued this afternoon. “I am disgusted, appalled, and outraged at the shooting which took the life of BDF soldier Jessie Escobar in Santa Familia on Sunday night.”
He stressed that the lethal force used in the situation was unjustified and that authorities need to send a clear message by ensuring that justice is served swiftly, and without impediment or interference.
Bernard called on the Belize Police Department, the Belize Defence Force, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to ensure that they seek and deliver the justice that Escobar’s family deserves.
“There is no excuse that can be accepted. None,” Bernard said.
Escobar was shot at close range with an M4 Carbine by a fellow BDF soldier on Sunday night in front of his wife and daughter, sparking public outrage and a call for justice.
