By BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department said today that the shooting incident in Branch Mouth Village, Cayo district last night where off duty Belize Defense Force Soldier Jesse Escobar was shot and killed, started because someone with him wasn’t wearing a mask.
The official police report regarding the incident said that a joint patrol consisting of a police constable and two BDF soldiers were conducting foot patrols near Branch Mouth Stop and Shop when a group of men arrived, one of whom was not wearing a mask.
The officer approached the man and asked him to put his mask on to which he complied, but then another man, later identified as Jesse Escobar, started an argument with the patrol team. That argument quickly escalated and ended with the police officer firing a warning shot, but Escobar continued to advance on the team. That’s when police say one of the BDF soldiers fired a single shot that hit Escobar, killing him on the spot.
The matter is under investigation.
