Warrant issued for arrest of former Minister of Works Rene Montero

By Aaron Humes: There is a warrant out, whose authenticity has been confirmed, for the arrest of former Minister of Works Rene Montero and one George Andrews on a charge of “willful oppression.”

The warrant, which appears to be signed by a Justice of the Peace, directs Inspector of Police Julio Shal, an investigator, and others working with him or who are fellows of the Department, to bring the duo before the courts forthwith as of September 3.

Under the Criminal Code, sections 284 and 309, the men are accused of unnamed and unexplained uses of their office to wilfully commit excess or abuse of authority in the injury of the public or any person. The offense carries on conviction to a prison sentence of two years.

Montero and Andrews are jointly accused of committing this offense between April 14, 2016, and November 12, 2020 – the day after the general election.

New Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing Julius Espat ordered a criminal investigation into allegations of prolonged use of the public property for personal gain, including the confiscation of various pieces of property allegedly belonging to or linked to the Ex-Minister.

Montero has publicly denied all wrongdoing. We continue to follow the story.
