7.4 magnitude earthquake reported in Mexico

By BBN Staff: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the richtor scale has been reported in southern Mexico, just northeast of Acapulco. Shaking was reportedly felt as far away as Mexico City.

The earthquake struck at 8:47 p.m. local time in Mexico.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.4, while Mexico’s seismological agency put the magnitude at 6.9. It struck about 50 kilometers below the surface, making it a shallow earthquake.

Details about damage and casualties have not yet been assessed.
