By BBN Staff: As a means of returning peace to Santa Familia Village after the shooting death of Jesse Escobar by a fellow Belize Defense Force soldier, the BDF will be withdrawing from the village.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams explained today that BDF patrols were in the area supporting police patrols, for a number of reasons, but the incident has shattered the trust between villagers and law enforcement, making their withdrawal necessary.
“Hopefully if we have only police in the village it is going to make it better to try and build back the relationship with the public,” Williams said.
He stressed that there were increasing reports of bandits as well as drug cartels that occasionally move through the area, and that police do not have the firepower to survive an engagement with those elements, making BDF support a necessity.
Escobar’s mother told the media that, following the incident, his 4-year-old daughter who witnessed his killing, bursts into tears whenever she sees a BDF soldier.
