By Aaron Humes: Thinking about going to that party or grouping in your neighborhood this weekend? Don’t be surprised to find Police officers waiting for you.
The Belize Police Department says it has seen advertisements promoting social events having the potential of drawing mass gatherings all over the country and in particular within the coastal communities.
Regulation 7(1) of Statutory Instrument No. 74 of 2021 provide for restrictions against any social event, in numbers of more than 10 persons at a time who are not of the same household. Regulation 9(1)(a) provides for restrictions against any private gathering which includes any person from outside your immediate household. Regulation 9(1)(b) also provides for restrictions against any recreational event.
So the advertised parties are patently illegal and attending them makes you as guilty as those having them.
The Department says, “In recent weeks we are seeing an increase in the number of daily infections as such the threat of Covid-19 is still real.
Therefore, we call on all to work with the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Belize Police Department to act responsibly by adhering to the protocols in place to safeguard us from the deadly Covid-19 virus. Anyone found in violation of these regulations will be dealt with to the full extent of the law.”
