Wife of Jesse Escobar seeking six-figure compensation for murder from Government

By Aaron Humes: The common-law wife of the late Jesse Escobar has filed for compensation from the government for his death allegedly at the hands of law enforcement, just four days ago.

No less than former Prime Minister and Senior Counsel Dean Barrow has written to the Minister of National Defence and Border Security along with the Attorney General, setting the sum demanded at a quarter-million dollars on behalf of the wife and daughter of Jesse Escobar who witnessed his killing.

The amount considers and covers the age of the deceased, 29; his salary, the age of his daughter and his wife, as well as the trauma and shock they suffered from witnessing his downfall.

Barrow expresses in the letter a wish to settle expeditiously even as the criminal case is built, stating, “We believe you, as Minister of Defence, and the entire Government of Belize will want to make amends as much as possible to [Jesse’s family] for the fatal wrong done by (the accused) Private (Raheem) Valencio…”

There is a one-year period on claims attached for wrongful death in civil procedure.
