American national pleads guilty to firearm charge but unable to pay fine, remanded to prison

Posted: Friday, September 10, 2021. 7:42 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: American national Zachary Ryan Green, 37, pleaded guilty to keeping an unlicensed firearm when he appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Green, who is just a tourist passing through Belize, got stuck when he experienced problems with his 30-foot sailboat bearing the name “MASS CONFUSION” and had to make a stop in Caye Caulker.

While there, police searched his vessel and found a 16-gauge shotgun which he could not produce a license for.

He was fined $2,000 plus $5 cost of court, but could not pay his fine immediately so he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

If he cannot pay his fine, Green will spend two years in prison. However, if he is able to pay he will be released and then expelled from the country.
