By Aaron Humes: Opening today’s presentation, Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner said the choice to defend the settlement in 1797 is the core of a “gritty, Belizean DNA” down the years.

It has served us well during the fight for Independence and in the ongoing battle to make Belize the best we can be.

And, he said, it is our collective spirit that will get us through the unending COVID storm that has struck repeatedly at our health, economic well-being and our sense of community.

The Council, Wagner promised, will stand in the front of promoting development and the steady hands of the health care sector will lead us through vaccination to a better day. If we tap into that DNA it will serve us well – we do not quit, we do not surrender, he concluded.

The ceremony is emanating again with a reduced distanced audience from the House of Culture.
