Fire departments suspects arson in Friday house fire, police still looking into it

Posted: Monday, September 13, 2021. 6:03 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: On Friday, September 10, a fire in Belize City destroyed four homes; and while the Belize National Fire Service (BNFS) suspects that it may be a case of arson, the Belize Police Department is waiting on more information to make that determination.

Officer Commanding the Crimes Investigation Branch (CIB) Superintendent Alejandro Cowo said that police are seeking one suspect in connection with the incident.

“At this moment I cannot possibly tell you it’s an arson because we have not received any direct indication or confirmed reports from the fire department, stating that it’s an arson,” Cowo said.

Cowo did confirm that one tenant from one of the houses made allegations that there was an altercation prior to the fire, which prompted the search for the person of interest.

The houses, which were located at the corner of Sibun Street and Nargusta Street, were all completely destroyed along with their contents.

A representative of the BNFS gave an interview to the media over the weekend where he stated that the incident is possibly a case of arson.
