Solar System upgrade for La Gracia Village, Cayo District

Posted: Monday, September 13, 2021. 4:08 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Power to the Cayo village of La Gracia has been upgraded and it is providing a model for future electrification of the country, according to a Government statement.

The previously installed 24kW (kilowatt-hour) smart solar hybrid system used lead-acid gel batteries which are now being replaced by state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries that have a lifespan of 30 years or 8,000 cycles.

The upgrade is necessary to ensure the continuous provision of electricity and the sustained operation of the facility, which currently provides 24/7 power to over 45 households. It was personally overseen by Minister of Public Utilities and Logistics Rodwell Ferguson.

The batteries were provided through a continued partnership with The cdw Foundation, ZENNA and local installers Solar Energy Solutions Belize.

The Government says the lessons learned at the La Gracia facility have been instrumental to the development of the ministry’s Rural Electrification Program. Under the project, the ministry is currently conducting the latest installation at Indian Creek, Toledo District, which will be commissioned in the coming weeks.
