KHMH Acting CEO makes public appeal for people to pick up bodies from the morgue

By BBN Staff: Today, acting Chief Executive Officer of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Timothy Seguro, pleaded with members of the public who have loved ones that have died from COVID-19 to pick up their bodies from the hospital morgue because there is no more space.

Seguro explained today that the hospital had two morgue storage units, one of which is dedicated to the Belize Police Department and the Forensic Department, which is currently out of order and has limited the morgue’s carrying capacity.

Seguro said that the morgue staff has been busy for the past few weeks calling loved ones to come to pick up bodies, but many have not seen a sense of urgency in doing so.

“As a general Belizean society we like to have this three to five to six, seven days wait for just planning. We are asking if they could cut that down to two days, three days, it would really assist us,” Seguro said. “There have been various reasons, from finance to ‘we’re waiting for a loved one to come from states.”

Seguro notes that there is a $100 undertaker fee charged once a body is taken to the morgue, and a fee of $50 per day for every day the body remains at the morgue, making it expensive for people to leave bodies there for extended periods of time.
