By Benjamin Flowers: The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) has exceeded its capacity to house COVID-19 infected patients, putting an extra strain on the hospital’s physical resources as well as its staff.
Today, the Acting CEO of the hospital Timothy Seguro, explained that the hospital has a bed capacity for COVID patients of 23 beds, but the hospital currently has around 26 COVID-19 positive patients, and an additional 7 patients in the Person Under Investigation (PUI) unit.
Seguro said that the overwhelming number of patients has pushed the hospital’s emergency mode to the limit, making a number of services such as specialists clinics and elective surgeries inaccessible to the public.
“For our staff, that means we have to be excess hours. I mean the average amount of hours the nurses and the physicians are working are around 60-70 hours per week, and not all of these staff claim over time, they are doing it out of their goodwill,” Seguro said.
The latest national update from the Ministry of Health and Wellness says that there are currently 39 patients currently hospitalized in standard COVID-19 units around the country, and 10 patients receiving critical care in an intensive care unit (ICU).
