Switzerland now requires COVID certificate to enter restaurants and bars

Posted: Tuesday, September 14, 2021. 9:51 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: According to The Local, Switzerland has begun requiring patrons entering a bar or restaurant to present a certificate to verify that they have been fully vaccinated, recovered from coronavirus, or tested negative for COVID-19.

The new measure began today, Monday, September 13, and will run until January 24th, 2022, but the Federal Council noted it “is ready to extend the deadline if the epidemiological situation requires it”.

The measure was already in place to access indoor facilities such as cultural and leisure facilities like museums, libraries, zoos, fitness centres, climbing halls, swimming pools, water parks, spas, billiard halls and casinos, but was expanded by the Federal Council due to “extremely high” occupancy rates in Swiss hospitals due to the virus.
The measure forms a part of a wider plan in place to address the spread of COVID-19, with violators facing fines of 100 francs for non-compliance; however, in an effort “to protect fundamental rights”, the government of Switzerland has deemed that religious ceremonies and political events for up to 50 people are exempt from restrictictions, as are self-help groups”.

The Local said that authorities will announce on Tuesday how the new requirement will apply to tourists coming to Switzerland. Health passes or vaccination certificates issued abroad may also be invalid in Switzerland, depending on the vaccine administered in the country of origin.
