CARICOM backs Guyana as Venezuelan parties negotiate end to political crisis

Posted: Wednesday, September 15, 2021. 8:07 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has once again backed the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Guyana in opposition to its neighbors, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

According to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) secretariat, there has been a round of negotiations in Mexico and mediated by Norway between representatives of the Government of Venezuela led by President Nicolas Maduro and the opposition, seeking to bring an end to the protracted multidimensional crisis afflicting that country.

Two of the initial agreements that have been reached are on the Social Protection of the Venezuelan People, and on the Ratification and Defence of Venezuelan Sovereignty over the Guyana Essequibo.

“As concerns the latter, the Caribbean Community reiterates its firm and unwavering support for the maintenance and preservation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Guyana. It also reaffirms its support for the ongoing judicial process of the International Court of Justice that is intended to bring a peaceful and definitive end to the long-standing controversy between the two countries and urges Venezuela to participate in the process,” the CARICOM statement concludes.

CARICOM has consistently backed both Guyana and Belize in their territorial disputes with neighbors Venezuela and Guatemala, respectively, both of which are now before The Hague.
