By Benjamin Flowers: Today, our brothers and sisters in Mexico celebrated the 211th anniversary of their independence from Spain, and a delegation from the Belize Defense Force was in Mexico today to join in the celebration.
Twenty-four officers of the BDF joined in on the Mexican Military Parade today as a symbol of support and friendship. The officers had left Belize on September 11th to be able to participate in the event.
“They are proudly wearing the new No. 6 uniform that will eventually be used by all soldiers on ceremonial parades in Belize and abroad,” the BDF said in a post on its official Facebook account.
Mexico and Belize established diplomatic relations back in 1981 and have maintained friendly relations since. The countries have signed numerous bilateral agreements and are members of several regional and international organizations such as the Association of Caribbean States, the Central American Integration System, the Organization of American States, and the United Nations.
Relations between the countries are so close that when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of schools last year, many students who commute from Mexico to attend classes in Belize were affected. Belizeans also frequented Mexico prior to the pandemic for recreation and shopping. Last year the Quintana Roo Chamber of Commerce estimated that not having Belizeans come over to shop was costing the municipality around 18 million Pesos (over BZ$1.8 million) per month.
