Dr. Adrian Coye: ‘COVID-19 has taken the air out of the room’

By Aaron Humes: Medical director of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), Dr. Adrian Coye said that with the bounceback of the pandemic we can no longer take the science for granted.

KHMH is on track for 150 admissions by the end of the month and Dr. Coye says it has taken the air out of the room. At its worst last year, Karl Heusner Memorial admitted 40 patients.

But he reminded that KHMH must treat other conditions and is unable to, focused as it is on treating unwell patients – 52 deaths already compared to 75 all of last year from 172 admissions.

His message is that Belize has reached worst-case scenario; indeed has been there for too long and must now swallow the bitter medicine of this tightened protocol.
