By Aaron Humes: Today is National Service Day in commemoration of the passing of the Right Honourable George Cadle Price, who died in 2011.
The National Hero and first Prime Minister long espoused humble public service in lieu of vainglorious recognition.
But his founding party has honored him with the commemoration of his birthday in January, and today will lay wreaths as they have traditionally done since his passing at his gravesite on the George Price Highway at Lords Ridge Cemetery starting at 9 a.m. Per tradition, the ceremony will be broadcast live.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the ceremony will be limited in number but usually, the party leader, chairman, and a representative of the Price and Usher families speak, along with the Mayor of Belize City.
In previous years, outdoor activities as acts of service would be held such as fixing up parks and playgrounds, giving food to the homeless, and so on.
Later today there is a presentation of the annual Tribute to Belizean Patriots and COVID-19 Heroes Award ceremony to be held virtually starting at 5:30 this evening.
We’ll have both events for you as they happen.
