By Aaron Humes: Anticipating dissent, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says his men were able to prevent members of the Free Belize Movement from entering Belize City from the north and west on Saturday, after explicitly warning that the protests were and are illegal.
Officer Commanding Eastern Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado, was directed to disperse the crowd and managed to do so, as well to detain the ringleader Zenaida Moya.
It is his judgment that “minimal force,” and indeed the minimum allowed to police by law, was used to detain and arrest Moya on Freetown Road.
Police took photographs and video of all participants and will be summoned for charges concerning both the protest and COVID-19 violations.
Williams said that the proper course for the protestors is to take the matter to court and their disagreement does not allow them to be above the law.
