Prime Minister remarks on the KHMH crisis: “The doctors were warning us…”

Posted: Monday, September 20, 2021. 11:05 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño is not much surprised by the news that Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital has reached capacity in its intensive care unit and COVID-19 ward as of Sunday.

On this first day of the two-week “fire break” taking effect (lengthened curfew, restrictions on churches and casinos, no movement Sundays), he responded to our request for comment by saying, “The doctors were warning us that this will happen. We are doing all we can to give the best medical attention that we can offer to all Belizeans especially those sick with Covid.”

He continued, “But this emergency underscores the importance of vaccinations. I am appealing to all Belizeans PLEASE get vaccinated. If you don’t want to do it for yourself do it for your loved ones.”

Prime Minister Briceño is back from attending the CELAC summit in Mexico City and will be participating in tonight’s flag-raising ceremony in Belize City and tomorrow’s official Independence Day ceremony in Belmopan, which to his knowledge he says has not been changed in format.

Expected speakers there include Mayor of Belmopan Sharon Palacio; Minister of Education Francis Fonseca as co-chair of the National Celebrations Commission; and newly installed Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber. We will of course be there in person with all the highlights.
