Official Independence Day Ceremony getting underway

By Aaron Humes: The Official Independence Day ceremony is underway in Belmopan.

It is the first for Prime Minister John Briceño in that capacity as well as for opposite number Patrick Faber as Leader of the Opposition, having just been reappointed last week.

There will also be a speech from Belmopan Mayor Sheran Palacio.

Following these will be the usual cultural performances.

The usual post-ceremony parades and events are canceled due to COVID-19.

There was a pre-show performance by the Band of the Grenadier Guards, supporting the British Army Training and Support Unit Belize (BATSUB).
