BDF soldier who stabbed Coast Guard officer, Elston Morter, detained by police pending charges

Posted: Wednesday, September 22, 2021. 3:59 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Police have detained two men in connection with the fatal stabbing of 28-year-old Coast Guard officer Elston Morter, one of them, a Belize Defence Force soldier accused of causing the fatal wound.

While police have given the soldier’s name, up to the point of releasing this article, he has not been formally charged for any offense, as such it must be excluded.

Police say that the incident unfolded yesterday around 4:30 p.m. and was believed to be the result of an argument that ensued between Marcel Gill, who was also stabbed in the incident and his neighbor over a traffic accident that occurred earlier that day. Morter had reportedly gone with Gill to the neighbor’s house to work out some arrangements regarding an accident when an argument ensued and then turned violent.

Director of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Fitzroy Yearwood said that the incident is not indicative of any major clash between security forces.

Yearwood said that the department is seeking advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as to what kind of charge is to be levied.
