Strong earthquake rocks Nicaragua

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook the Nicaraguan coast early on Wednesday.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake which had a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale had its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean about 50 miles southwest of Jiquilillo.

Jiquilillo lies on the northwestern Nicaraguan coast some 90 miles northwest of Managua in the department of Chinandega.

Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa reports that at least 30 replicas ranging from 2.1 to 5.7 had been felt up to 8:30 am after the initial quake at 4 am on Wednesday.

La Prensa said the quake was also felt in El Salvador.

Nicaraguan officials said the emergency organizations were activated but no damage had been reported.
