Courts/Unicomer helps KHMH healthcare heroes relax

By Aaron Humes: More than PPE, supplies, ventilators, or anything else they might wish for, the nurses and doctors of the COVID-19 ward specifically and the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) generally want just one thing these days: a rest.

Keeping up with the demands of dying and ill COVID patients on a daily basis is mentally and physically draining on these unsung heroes, and so today’s donation from UNICOMER/Courts Belize Limited, while a tad unusual, is most welcome.

This morning at its main branch on the Philip Goldson Highway in Belize City, Courts handed over a set of recliners, a coffee maker, cups, and various other accessories with a total value of 3 thousand dollars to the hospital’s representatives.

To say the least, Nurse Casilda Bowman, Unit Manager of the COVID/Patient Under Investigation Unit, was ecstatic. “This donation will definitely come as a great surprise and I am telling you my staff will love it! We don’t get much time to get a break, but listen, when we do get a break, it will be in comfort – they will be able to take a power nap, relax their feet after standing for so many hours, they will love it. And anybody who knows nurses will know that coffee runs in their veins, so I am telling you they will be totally overjoyed and they will love it…”

Nurse Bowman added that donations like these encourage the workers that their sacrifices are being seen and appreciated by the general public and will help them push on, and literally restoring their personal energy.

Managing Director of UNICOMER Javier Ponce stated that it was part of Courts’ social responsibility to reach out as it has, and challenged other companies to do the same: “This is also a call to every other company that would want to come forward and put something on the line for these people so we hope they will make the most of it.”

The Unit has 26 nurses, seven patient care assistants, six attendants, and between 10 and 12 doctors working on shift. Their lounge (each unit of the hospital has one) currently consists only of a doctors’ station for inputting information and a solitary, small bed.
