By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Guatemalan president Alejandro Giammattei says his government wants to resolve the Belize dispute permanently and definitively.

Giammattei made the announcement on Wednesday, September 22, at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“We reiterate that the International Court of Justice plays a vital role as the main judicial body of the United Nations and we reaffirm our commitment to resolve in a permanent and definitive manner before this court the territorial and maritime and island dispute with Belize, a country with whom we would like to have a privileged relationship in order to peacefully resolve common problems.”

On June 2, Giammattei met with Belize’s Prime Minister John Briceño in Guatemala and both promised to work amicably.

PM Briceño will also be addressing the UN General Assembly.
