By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) has upgraded Tropical Depression 18 to Tropical Storm Sam saying it should become a hurricane by tomorrow and continue strengthening into a ‘near major hurricane’ by Sunday.

Sam is located about 1745 miles east southeast of the northern Leeward Islands.

It’s packing 50 miles per hour winds and moving west at 16 miles per hour. Sam’s expected to continue the same motion over the next several days but should slow down.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, but since it’s expected to slow down, the NHC said “it remains too early to determine what impacts, direct or indirect, could be felt by the Lesser Antilles by this cyclone”.
