Belize City Council works out garbage situation with Belize Waste Control

Posted: Friday, September 24, 2021. 9:27 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize City Council (CitCo) announced today that it has worked out an arrangement with Belize Waste Control to resume the normal schedule for the collection of residential garbage.

CitCo explained that the arrangement was made after the council had paid its arrears owed to BWC through assistance from the Government of Belize (GOB).

“The GOB was made aware of outstanding property taxes owed to the government acquired across the city and agreed to settle these property arrears with the council,” CitCo said.

CitCo noted that the new arrangement with the central government brings the issues faced with collecting residential garbage to a definitive end and has also managed to clear off some of its debt which was previously deemed uncollectable.

On August 31, the council issued a notice that residential garbage would only be collected once a week due to the ongoing issue with BWC. The new resolution brings that saga to an end in just over three weeks.
