Hurricane Sam is intensifying, could become major hurricane by tonight or Saturday

Posted: Friday, September 24, 2021. 9:35 am CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Hurricane Sam went from a tropical depression to a hurricane in just one day moving up from 35 miles per hour to 75 miles per hour on Thursday. Sam is still intensifying rapidly said the United States National Hurricane Center in it 6 a.m. advisory.

Sam is producing 75 miles per hour winds with higher gusts and is likely to become a major hurricane tonight or early Saturday said the NHC. Sam, located 1470 miles east southeast of the northern Leeward Islands, is moving west at 15 miles per hour.

The NHC said it is likely to turn northwestward as it approaches the northern Leeward Islands

Hurricane Sam is the 18th named storm of the season and the seventh hurricane so far.

“Places like Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Bermuda and even the East Coast of the US need to watch the storm closely over the next week,” CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said. “The models don’t currently agree where the storm is headed, but do agree that it’s likely to be a powerful hurricane.”
