By Rubén Morales Iglesias: United States Secretary of State Antony J Blinken on Thursday met with Mexican, Central American Foreign Ministers, including Belize’s Eamon Courtenay, at the United Nations in New York City said US Department of State Spokesperson Ned Price.
“Secretary Blinken and his counterparts discussed shared priorities in the region, including collaboratively addressing the challenges of irregular migration, confronting corruption, and building our economies back stronger in the wake of COVID-19,” said Price.
Price added that Secretary Blinken concentrated on “joint efforts to respond to the region’s migration challenge, including the root causes of irregular migration and more effectively managing migration flows in and through Central and North America”.
Blinken also addressed the problem of corruption and impunity, strongly encouraging regional leaders to fortify democratic institutions and the rule of law. He said that will open more doors to foreign investment and will generate more economic opportunities for the people of the region.
Blinken also encouraged the leaders to support the people of Nicaragua who are being politically repressed and whose human rights are being abused by the Ortega-Murillo government.
Price also said Blinken explained to the regional leaders how the US plans to assist the region in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and “Build Back Better” through inclusive economic growth and increased foreign investment.
