By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño is celebrating a successful appearance in New York City at the United Nations General Assembly and a restructuring of the original Superbond.
He touts what will be a reduction of the National debt by $500 million (of more than $4 billion), or 12 cents of every dollar making up to $200 million over 20 years available for a Marine Conservation Endowment Fund, protecting livelihoods in fishing and tourism, and most importantly, setting a solid path for economic recovery and improved fiscal management: “We have stepped boldly on a global scene leading a path that joins debt management, fiscal prudence, and environmental conservation and management.”
Briceño adds, “We have once again shown that as a small developing nation challenged in unprecedented ways due to the COVID-19 economic and health crises, we remain with steady minds and hands and charted a way to debt management that is being congratulated the world over and holds us up as a leader.”
Belize is now an example, if successful with obtaining financing by the Nature Conservancy and Credit Suisse AG, of true homegrown financial and debt management and has managed to thumb the eye of unfair structural impediments for small States to access affordable financing, debt management efforts, and exaggerated by the economic and health crises brought on by Covid-19.
