Posted: Saturday, September 25, 2021. 8:22 pm CST.

By Hugh O’Brien: Since August 1st this year, Belize has recorded a total of 64 deaths due to, or related to, COVID-19. Of these 64 deaths, 10 were fully vaccinated individuals while the remaining 54 were largely unvaccinated.

According to the Ministry of Health, of the 10 fully vaccinated people who died due to COVID-19, four (4) were in the 50-59 age group, and six (6) in the 60+ age group.

In addition, 40 of the 64 COVID-19 related deaths, occurred between September 3-24. This means that the average COVID-19 related death is approaching 2 per day since September 3.

The COVID-19 daily report for Friday, September 24, clearly showed the benefit of getting vaccinated, particularly in preventing hospitalization and reducing the chance of dying from COVID-19. Of the 36 COVID-19 patients that were hospitalized, 25 were not vaccinated, six (6) had only received one dose, and five (5) were fully vaccinated. Thirteen (13) of the admissions were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 12 of these 13 ICU admissions were not vaccinated; One was partially vaccinated. In addition on Friday, three (3) more COVID-19 deaths were recorded, all three (3) being unvaccinated individuals.

As of September 24, the Ministry of Health and Wellness reports 189,043 persons have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines while 115,175 persons have been fully vaccinated in Belize.

The first set of vaccinations were done with the AstraZeneca vaccine but more recently the Ministry has added Sinopharm, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccines to the platter.
